Schmidt, bob

When I was 14, I went to Jim Wehrheim’s cabin on a lake in Wisconsin. That weekend I decided my dream was to work and live in Wisconsin on a lake. That dream became a reality.

I went to Northland College in Ashland Wisconsin and earned a double major in Business and Art. My father jokingly told me to take business because he had seen my art. Love the man and he was right!

Out of college, I started working for Brunswick as a store manager in Chicago and Indianapolis. I found my way back to Wisconsin through a job at a local electric and gas utility. During 34 years with the utility, I held several jobs, moved 5 times and survived 3 mergers. I have lived in Phillips, Ashland, Ladysmith, Amery and currently in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. In 1997, I started an advertising and consulting company as a backup plan to all the utility company reorganizations and downsizing. I continued the advertising and consulting business for other utilities after my power company retirement 10 years ago. Work includes finding long-term energy supply for smaller utilities including energy futures contracts, wind and solar projects.

Tracy and I have been together for 20 years. It’s all part of the dream. She has 3 children and I have 2. Together we have 10 grandchildren between the ages of 2 to 14. We enjoy seeing all their sports and activities. We also enjoy spending time in Port Charlotte, Florida when we can during the winter. Life is good.

I’m retired in beautiful Portland Maine. After being home with my 2 kids for a few years (in New Hampshire) I discovered what I wanted to be when I grew up. After getting a nursing BSN, I put in a few years nursing and then went to midwifery school. I worked in this field for about 15 years, until my practice was shut down in a hospital takeover. I now spend time playing with artsy stuff and volunteering.

I graduated from Colorado State University in 1975 with a degree in social work. I worked with juvenile delinquents my entire career and retired in 2001, only to substitute teach in special ed, concentrating on the more difficult students. After a while I was done working with troubled youth and went into volunteering, which I still do. I have lived in Colorado since 1969 and have lived in Indian Hills, which is located a stones throw from Red Rocks amphitheater since 1980. My wife and I have been married 25 years, my second, her first. We have two children, two grandchildren, a dog, and eight chickens. Nicole is a recently retired special teacher and is now teaching yoga and meditation. We travel a lot and have been to Africa, southeast Asia, and most recently England, where we hiked the coast to coast trail. That was my second long distance hike, having completed the Colorado trail two summers ago. We have 35 acres and a yurt outside of Buena Vista, Colorado and try to spend a lot of time there. Thats all folks; hope to see you soon.

I can’t believe how far my GBS diploma has taken me – all the way to Tampa, Florida! Over the past 50 years I have only worked three jobs. 1) Cook at Hackney’s, 2) Computer programmer at Kemper Insurance,  3) Math professor at Daytona State College.

I am delighted to say I have been married to the same wonderful woman for over forty years. Even at our age we are the proud parents of nine-year old twins, Pandora and Hercules – our faithful bulldogs.

Few classmates may remember I introduced Elmo Johnson to our class. He was actually a dummy I created and kept in my school locker. I ran him in school elections and gathered a petition with hundreds of classmates’ signatures to elect Elmo for senior class president. He now resides comfortably in my garage in Tampa.

My life since high school has been like a three-strand cord, more tightly woven as the years have progressed. I would like to share this personal information in hopes that it will encourage others to disclose and connect.

Family and spiritual life. My parents moved to Seguin, TX in 1976, just before I entered graduate school. My mother died in 1985 and my dad lived until 2007.  My brother, Craig, lives in Wauwatosa, WI, where he remarried and began a second career in medical informatics. My sister, Patty, lives near Lubbock, TX, still works as a nurse and is the mother of five and grandmother of a bunch more. Janet and I met and married in Gainesville, FL, in 1981. Our oldest, Beth (34) is a doctor (family medicine) and mother of our three grandchildren:  Jethro (6); Edessa (3) and Genevieve (8 mos.). They live in Milwaukee, where Beth’s husband is a doctoral student in philosophy at Marquette. Our second daughter, Rebekah (31), is here in Atlanta, working as an executive assistant for the National Christian Foundation. Our son, Magnus (27), is a software developer at a small tech firm, also in Atlanta. Janet and I have lived in Roswell since 1986.  She retired last year after 25 years of teaching high school English.

In Glenview I grew up Lutheran and then began a spiritual odyssey our senior year. For a couple years I delved into Christian Science, but eventually left it because that God became too impersonal and abstract. I felt guilty for not attaining emotional healing. I then explored Eastern thought, with an affinity to Taoism. Throughout my life I have been a follower of Jesus Christ. At times I have tried to combine faith with other religions and traditions. I love the Hebraic foundation; most of my roommates in college and grad school were Jewish, including the Best Man at our wedding. In God’s irony, I entered the Evangelical world at the start of grad school, which was an anti-Christian environment. Janet and I met in a Bible study and were married in an Evangelical Free Church. For over 40 years I have sailed in that stream of Christianity, but am now exploring other options that are quieter and deeper, e.g. Episcopalian, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic or maybe back to Lutheran. (check out the app:  “Pray as You Go”). The Spirit calls in a still, small voice!

Emotional turmoil.  I entered the mental health field at the grass roots level—as a patient. I suffered my first severe depressive episode in October of our senior year, somehow managing to hide it, even during football. In subsequent years I had many such episodes, disrupting my education and at times placing me back home alone in Glenview. Much psychotherapy and some medical treatment helped me survive the hell of this mood disorder. I am grateful to be alive and stable, with my last episode occurring in 2004. Sometimes we “major in our deficiencies.” As a clinical psychologist for 35 years, I have had the opportunity to pass on the healing. I know what it is to be suicidal, feel hopeless and then discover hope and recovery.

Achievement.  Even though I have a Ph.D. and have made a number of professional accomplishments, I believe my level of achievement motivation peaked at GBS, where my intense competitiveness resulted in acceptance at Harvard, Princeton and Yale. I chose Harvard, rooming with Howie Conant freshman year. I enjoyed Harvard and sometimes thrived there, but personal emotional issues (see above) caused interruptions. During leaves of absence I worked blue collar jobs, hitchhiked to the west coast and bicycled from Mississippi to Guatemala with Andy Baldwin and Dave Slown. After work as a psychiatric aide at Forest Hospital in Des Plaines, I returned to Harvard, graduating in 1977. I then attended the U. of Florida (Go Gators!), where I earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. We moved to Atlanta, where I have been in private practice (see website) and have done some graduate teaching. At 65, I became a candidate at the Brookhaven Inst. for Psychoanalysis and Christian Thought (BIPACT). I am the old guy in this wonderful program. I feel like the ugly duckling who found other swans. Thus, my faith, history of mental illness and healing and professional training continue to be woven together. For that I am grateful. What matters is not achievement, but relationships. Competition and envy saturate our society. I prefer connection and love, which brings us to this 50thReunion!.

I enjoy singing and writing very much. I have sung with North Shore Choral Society and the Edgewater Singers. After way too much work and the inevitable accompanying despair, I finally got my first book published in December, 2015, a cross-genre book consisting of essays, short stories and poetry. The title of the book is The Unpublished Poet: On Not Giving Up on Your Dream. I can hear you laughing already at the unpublished poet part of the title, and if you are a poet yourself, you will likely be laughing louder! I had some truly pleasant surprises with this book, and the one that I am most proud of is that the former Poet Laureate of Indiana, Norbert Krapf, endorsed the book. I wept when I got that news. Check him out for a good read when you can. He was horribly and routinely sexually abused by the same priest and finally decided that he had to write about it.

Aside from that, I love long walks, hiking, biking, and swimming. I am now trying to carve out some time for reading. I am also involved on the refugee committee at my church, something that I think makes me a better and more moral person. What these people have been through many times breaks my heart. I have participated in political marches and done canvassing for a candidate running for the Illinois Senate. I was so happy to have recently been able to be part of a luncheon organized by Representative Jan Schakowski, one in which I got to see the current Mayor of San Juan speak.

I have a 29-year-old-daughter named Maggie Fay. I am perhaps too serious of a person, but I get relief from having a lot of fun and laughing. So, I hope to get some of the latter at the Reunion! And please...check your "dancing card" and keep me in mine for the next dance...and all the more so as my husband of 33 years, Jim, is not an eager dancer!

stevens, betsy (elizabeth adams)

I left “Betsy” behind after college and have been “Elizabeth” ever since.  With 2-year old daughter Lisa in tow, I attended the 1989 reunion and was happy to see so many of my GBS classmates. That weekend I also learned was expecting daughter #2, Mars.

I spent most of my professional life in institutional investment management and the personal trust side of financial services. After seven years with Continental Bank, I worked ten years with Goldman, Sachs, fifteen years at Wells Fargo, was honored to manage one of the six initial Schwab Private Client offices, and finished out my corporate career with Union Bank in San Francisco.

I divorced in 1999. After an unexpected layoff, I decided to head in a brand-new direction, and, leveraging off my natural proclivities, launched The Insightful Organizer in 2010.  Initially, the projects were fairly routine, but they quickly expanded to just about anything that clients requested. I sit in on investment manager meetings, hire staff, pay bills and charitable donations, set up business and home offices, do design review on new building and remodeling projects, and coordinate whole house moves, and handle trust company estate cleanouts. While most of my clients are Bay Area based, I have traveled to over a dozen cities on projects. The best part of my work are my clients, who are terrific.

I absolutely love being a mom to my two children, both of whom live close by. Lisa, now 32, and my wonderful new son-in-law, Stephen, are in Sacramento, and Mars, 29, is in Oakland. We are so lucky to live so close and to be able to spend time together.

Ten years ago, I joined the House Corporation Board for the Chi Omega chapter in Berkeley where we manage all the maintenance, staff, provisions, and surprises that a 1920’s mansion housing 70 women has to offer. I’m also on the Board of Directors for The Children’s Support League. I was Tour Co-Chair last year when the 30 of us raised over $200,000 to support at-risk children in our local communities.

I love to be in the kitchen, still entertain a lot, and definitely have much more travel in my future. I made a three-week trip to Egypt last year which was more fabulous than I ever could have imagined – no less than a life changing experience. I’m happy to leave for Italy at the drop of a hat and the girls and I think Paris in the spring is simply perfect. I love to go to concerts and the Stones still are my favorite band.

So looking forward to this weekend. My sincere thanks to the Reunion Committee for all their hard work and for the terrific events they have lined up for us.

After our 1969 graduation, I attended college on the east coast for 1½ years. Then I quit school, got a very low selective service draft number, got called up for and unfortunately passed the armed forces physical (even though I was still as skinny as I was at GBS). Fearful of army conscription and Vietnam, I joined the navy. After 1½ years in the navy, I was discharged for conscientious objection. After another year of college on the west coast, I started a career in pharmaceutical R&D in ’74 and retired after 40+ years in that career. During that time period and while working full time, I finally completed my bachelor’s and jumped into a PhD that crashed after 10 years of effort. The upside of this disaster is that I met a fine woman during grad school and married her in ’84. Our first daughter was born in ’91 and our family moved a year later to Raleigh, NC. Our second daughter was born in Raleigh in ’94. My wife divorced me after 25 years of marriage (I was traded for her boss and, to excuse the ‘60s vernacular, a real bummer). I did get a chance to visit Glenview during the 4th of July holiday in 2009. Highlights included eating a brick of Hackney fried onions and receiving an inside tour of GBS by a woman who was working the GBS front desk during the holiday. I am really looking forward to again seeing GBS and all of you folks during the reunion.

Carol Swenson 3.jpg

swenson, Carol (Rose)

Well another GBSer told me to write something funny. Pretty average life. Married in 1974 first guy I had sex with so had to marry him.🤔He was lazy so I divorced him 😳 well otherwise my life would have been crap.

Met the next guy and slept with him and guess what I married him! ( No I’m not catholic.) We were married for almost 10 years and the best thing from him is my son (who also went to GBS and graduated from NU) who is now 39 and expecting his first son! My second husband and I opened up a flower shop, David Travis Florist in Evanston, Ill. Owning that shop was fun, hard work and I was proud to be a part of the Evanston business community. He died by suicide in 2004.

I once had a friend who told me “Carol you don’t have to marry every guy you sleep with.” Well I didn’t listen and I met a guy and married him. Yes it was crazy fun sex!!!!It will be 31 years in November. We had a lot of fun specifically riding our Harley all over the country for 12* years. I took lessons but I like riding on the back and besides that I’m a really awesome passenger!I I’m actually in a couple biker magazines🤔😉 I have two stepsons and 4 grandchildren. I worked for 31 years for Kellogg School of Management at the James L. Allen Center managing the space. I retired in 2017 to Iola Wis. only because we have a house here on a 50 acre no-motor lake. I miss working but I volunteer at the Humane Society of Waupaca County and I love it. Others say you have to reinvent yourself. I have not and after 31 years in one job well..... you figure it out.

Taylor, Julie (julia Hitchins)

Graduated: Colorado State University. Degree: Journalism.

My entire career was in Advertising and Media in downtown Chicago.

I worked on the Agency Side for 5 Years then went to Radio Sales for NBC WLS and then for 22 years with 101.9 “The Mix”.  My husband Charlie worked most of his Career with WMAQ TV in Sales. We were lucky enough to travel with our clients to Olympics and other exotic destinations, including Egypt, Viet Nam and the Orient Express. Not to speak of all the sporting and concert events.

We lived on the 50th floor in downtown Chicago for 30 years (just a block away from “top of the rock”) and owned second homes in Lake Geneva, Sanibel, and Amelia Islands, and now in the hills of Austin Texas.

I retired 8 years ago in Savannah got my real estate license, sold for 5 years and hated it! Now I just play golf, work out and travel. I am a docent at The Cathedral and volunteer at Hospice.

Post GBS I started running. I did four Chicago Marathons '79-'82.

Then started doing Triathlons in 1984. I have done about 33, and lucky enough to be able to still do them. Now I am just doing the Sprint distance.

We have a son “Patrick” who lives in Austin Texas and is expecting our first grand child in July. He started a web site that encourages workout competition within a business.

I am still having a great time, pugh now I take Ubers. With so many FOND memories of GBS. Savannah is a beautiful historic town. Worth visiting!

I have been a professional artist for the past 45 years; living and working in Chicago since 1990. In 1990 I purchased a 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing building on the west side converting the first two floors into artist studios for rent and the top two floors into my work studio and living space.

In 2005 I built a second studio on 20 acres in the mountains of northwest Montana outside Glacier Park. I continue to split time creating in both Chicago and Montana.

Wehrheim, Jim

I spent the first 24 years of my working life as a hospital products salesman in Chicago and neighboring states.

It was during this time, I was married for 20 years and raised three sons. I filed for divorce in 1998 and the effects were devastating on my children.

I moved to Cave Creek, Arizona to help my dad who was living in Peoria, Arizona, care for my mom who was suffering with Alzheimer’s.

The Bible states “He who encourages others encourages himself.”  (Proverbs 11:25)

For this reason, I had a website built and began to market myself as a motivational speaker calling this endeavor “Halftime Talks International” now on Facebook as “Half Time Talks.”

It was during this period I volunteered my time for two and a half years at the Adobe Mountain Boys Prison in Phoenix, leading a weekly Bible study for incarcerated boys between the ages of fourteen and eighteen years old.

I was responsible for the “Crossroads Unit” which housed the most violent boys with severe anger issues who were at the crossroads of their life. During this time, over one hundred and forty boys prayed with me and asked Jesus Christ to come into their hearts, forgive their sins and make them new and better men. This was one of the most rewarding times of my life.

Both of my parents were on hospice and passed away in my arms ten months apart. It was at this time I took the necessary steps to become an ordained and licensed hospice chaplain. I have been a full-time hospice chaplain for the past fifteen years and I am responsible for the spiritual encouragement of terminally ill people.

In 2019 I was surprised by love and reconnected with a girl I was smitten by forty-eight years earlier when she and I were eighteen- and nineteen-year-old freshman and sophomores in college. We were married on our shared birthday of April 18th two years ago at the age of 67 and 68 years young. We are very much in love and I consider her a long-awaited gift from God.

It has been fun reading everyone’s bio from an adult perspective. You are all so talented and I love what I remember about each of you!

Attended University of Wisconsin Whitewater and Harper College. Tanya and I got married in 1972. What's that...48 years? Seems like a lot less! Time flies when you're having fun! We have two daughters, one son, and one grandson. Tanya is a retired college professor. I've been into cartooning since about age 10, which eventually led to a career at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO, writing and illustrating funny cards. Concurrently, I drew editorial cartoons for the Kansas City Business Journal. After retiring in 2009, I began doing a syndicated comic panel called 'Free Range', and we moved back to Chicago where our two daughters live. Much to our delight, we've been learning how much fun grandchildren are! Who knew, right? When I'm not cartooning, I have a musical itch that needs scratching, so I play guitar in a blues band in clubs and corporate events around the Chicago area. That's it in a nut.

Williams, Ruth (adele)

I don’t see other people coming out in these bios. Statistically, there should be 45 of us. In high school, I was not yet aware that I am a lesbian. I came out when I was 20. No, I’m not married, but I have had a couple of 10-year relationships, before we were legally recognized. Fortunately, at 20 I was in Madison WI, a very safe and supportive (and fun!) place to come out in 1971. I loved everything about the progressive political community of Madison. It was a great place to study, in between the anti-war rallies and marches. I took semester-long breaks and traveled a lot, hitchhiking (not alone!) a total of 35,000 miles in my 20's--Europe and then North America several times over. After my B.S. (Genetics), I worked in what was called the Food Movement, the food coops and the coop warehouse selling organic, whole food to all the coops.

By 1979, I had discovered naturopathic medicine, and moved to Seattle to attend Bastyr University's 4-year, post-graduate naturopathic medical school. The first day in this then-tiny school, then-obscure profession, thousands of miles from home, I came upon GBS '69 classmate and fellow high school science nerd John Hibbs. John and I were classmates at Bastyr for 4 years, and have remained close friends since. We will be coming to the reunion together!

I have now practiced naturopathic medicine for 36 years, but just part time at this point. I moved from the Pacific Northwest to Colorado in 1991, and by the 2000's got deeply involved in dog rescue. I spend 4 days a week, every week of the year, hiking with my dogs on amazing mountain trails within a 15 min. drive from my house. I’m outside a lot and live a pretty simple, low-key lifestyle.

Taking a cue from Jim Siwy's triad of influences, I’ll say the 3 most influencing factors for me so far have been the lesbian community, the naturopathic community, and the positive-reinforcement dog training and rescue community.

woodworth, doug

I’m not sure my life will be that interesting to anyone, but I’ll give it a try.

After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University with a BS in History, I moved to Chicago and started working for a residential real estate development and management company where I stayed for 34 years.

Eventually moved back to Glenview, married my first wife and raised three terrific sons, all of whom went to Glenbrook South and thankfully all graduated from college and have interesting careers of their own.

After retiring in 2007 I became involved in running a family owned publishing business that specialized in art education resources for schools and teachers.

I continue to serve as a Trustee on a union related Health, Welfare and Pension Fund in Chicago.

I enjoyed golf, scuba diving, and skiing for many years and was also an avid sailboat racer in Chicago, owned several different boats over the years and competed in over 60 Chicago and Port Huron to Mackinac Island Yacht Races. I also competed in numerous other races on the Great Lakes, San Francisco Bay and elsewhere in California and cruised the Bahamas and Virgin Islands.

I currently have a powerboat and cruise the waters of south Florida.

I moved to Marco Island, Florida full time with my wonderful wife Valerie in 2017. We enjoy travel, boating and the casual island life here but have also become involved in local politics and environmental issues related to water quality.

There it is, a life in 6 paragraphs and 262 words.
